Basketball news

In case you missed it, Coach Felton named Tri-Captiains for the upcoming season.  The team selected the two seniors, Corey Butler and Terrance Woodbury, and junior Albert Jackson to fill Dave Bliss and Sundiata Gaines’ shoes.  I really like the choices the team made here.  To pick your two seniors and your emerging star as your team leader, you are focused on the task at hand.  I am not ready to declare this the season it all comes together, but I do like what I am seeing from afar for the Dawgs.  Of course, the media isn’t impressed, picking the Dawgs to finish last in the SEC East.

Also, today starts the early signing period for basketball. Demario Mayfield and Daniel Miller will sign to play for Coach Felton next year.

Mayfield, who is projected as a two guard, is from Franklin County.  He is 6-3 and 175.  Coaches love his vision and ability to move with the ball, but really love his tenacious defense.  He has gotten some play over the summer in Philly at the Reebok All-American Camp and in AAU ball, so that can only help his play by ramping up the competition beyond that in Region 8-AAAA.  He was 2nd Team all-state as a junior.

Miller, a center, is from Loganville Christian.  Perhaps you have heard of his grandfather, Spec Towns?  Yeah, that one.  Miller is 6-10 and 245, has lead his team to a 45-1 record and two state titles in the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia and Alabama conference the past two years.  His strengths are his size and pursuit to the ball on shots.  He could use some work on backside D help and developing a drop step.

Rivals is saying Derrick Favors might commit somewhere soon, but wait until spring to sign.  He reportedly has his choices down to Georgia, Tech, NC State and Memphis.  Apparently Georgia and Tech are his top two choices.  I don’t see him playing far from home, so Europe is out.  He is in all likelihood a one and done kind of player.

It gets real on Friday night when USC-Upstate visits Stegman at 7:30.

Women’s Basketball News
For the Lady Dawgs, Coach Landers will start the season just 11 wins short of 800 for his career.  His team starts the season ranked 25th in the USA Today Poll and return three starters from last season in Ashley Houts, Angel Robinson and Angela Puelo.  The SEC is such a tough conference, but expect the Lady Dawgs to challenge both Tennessee and Vandy for top honors in the East, this with a team that is a year away from being scary good.

The Lady Dawgs tip off the season on Saturday at 5pm in Athens against Alabama State.

Editorial Note:  Coach Landers did ok today.  Top 5 recruiting class.  Congrats, Coach!

Go Dawgs!

A Georgia Dawg in the Mid-West alone with his thoughts.

BBQ, Ball and Bets

There's nothing like a sunny fall afternoon, pork BBQ (with mustard sauce, of course!), a pregame tailgate, and...betting online. You heard me right. With a laptop and an internet connection you can check the odds of any game from the 50 yard line. Now that's convenience and will make your tailgate all the more interesting when some dude mentions just how much of a good bet a certain game is.
