Because I am not Mark May

Since I went out on a limb and did some predictions, I feel it is only right that I man up and say when I am wrong, or at least make note that I was wrong on the blog.

1. San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia
Boise State vs. TCU in San Diego
Qualcomm Stadium Dec. 23, 8 p.m. ESPN

TCU has one of the best D’s in the country.  Boise State is looking to keep its record as pristine as its kids lives.  Defense wins championships.  In this case, it’ll be the Poinsettia bowl championship.

WINNER: TCU by one.

2. FedEx BCS National Championship Game
Florida vs. Oklahoma in Miami
Dolphin Stadium, Jan. 8, 8pm Fox

It’s the National Championship game.

WINNER: Florida by 10.  Oh, the humanity.

3. Pacific Life Holiday
Oklahoma State vs. Oregon in San Diego
Qualcomm Stadium Dec. 30, 8 p.m. ESPN

The Cowboys are looking to prove they can win the big game.  Regretfully for them, this is as close to a BCS game as they will get.  Both teams have big time offenses.  This one will have the most offensive of all the bowls.  I am going with the Cowboys in a game that could be decided by four or fewer points, but will have over 100 points.

WINNER: Oregon by 11.  This was the first of many games that brought the top of the Big 12 crashing back to Earth.  I honestly thought Okie State was much more physical than Oregon.  I was wrong.

4. Allstate Sugar
Utah vs. Alabama in New Orleans
Superdome Jan. 2, 2009, 8 p.m. FOX

Welcome to New Orleans, Utes.  Bourbon Street is closed.  Not really.  Not that’d you know.

WINNER: Utah by 16.  Ugly. Early.

5. Brut Sun
Oregon State vs. Pittsburgh in El Paso, Texas
Sun Bowl Dec. 31, 2 p.m. CBS

McCoy vs. Rogers in a great battle of running backs.  Pitt ended up having a decent season.  Oregon State was one win away from the Rose Bowl.  Look for Oregon State to show Pitt a thing or two about playing in a real conference.

WINNER: No one.  Oregon State did finally score a field goal to beat Pitt, though.

6. Capital One
Georgia vs. Michigan State in Orlando, Fla.
Florida Citrus Bowl Jan. 1, 2009, 1 p.m. ABC

I’ll spend much more time on this one later, but two of the top two running backs in the country on the field at the same time means some pretty exciting football.

WINNER: Georgia by 12.  Yay! They covered!

7. GMAC
Tulsa vs. Ball State in Mobile, Ala.
Ladd-Peebles Stadium Jan. 6, 2009, 8 p.m. ESPN

The GMAC normally isn’t that compelling.  This year is different.  Tulsa looked like world beaters until a date with Arkansas.  They have been pedestrian since then.  Ball State looked like MAC beaters until last weekend.  Take the Hurricanes and hope both teams offenses show up.  I think they will.

WINNER: Tulsa by 32.  This is not the game anyone thought it would be. One team was pissed it crapped away a conference championship.  One remembered it was Ball State.

8. Meineke Car Care
West Virginia vs. North Carolina in Charlotte, N.C.
Bank of America Stadium Dec. 27, 1 p.m. ESPN

Bill Stewart, one hit wonder vs. Butch Davis, miracle worker.  Look for miracles to never cease.

WINNER: WVU by one.  Bill Stewart is 2-0 in bowl games.  Take that, RichRod.

9. AT&T Cotton
Ole Miss vs. Texas Tech in Dallas
Cotton Bowl Jan. 2, 2009, 2 p.m. FOX

Wow, I would have never thought this coaching matchup could have taken place.  IF I thought the game would be more competitive, I would have moved it to the top ten.  Crazy, haha vs. the Dread Pirate Leach.  Awesome.

WINNER: Ole Miss by 13.  Wow.  Just. Wow.  In PWD’s Bowl Pool, I had Texas Tech as my 4th most confident pick.  The defense question about the Big 12 got answered here.  The answer was no.

10. Texas
Rice vs. Western Michigan in Houston
Reliant Stadium Dec. 30, 8 p.m. NFL Network

Tons of offense is all you need to know. Tons and tons.

WINNER: Rice by 24.

11. EagleBank Bowl
Wake Forest vs. Navy in Washington, D.C.
RFK Stadium Dec. 20, 11 a.m. ESPN

Rematch!  Navy won in the regular season.  Wake has been in a ton of close games.  Look for this one to go to the wire with Wake winning this time.

WINNER: Wake by 10.  Nice comeback for the Deacons.

12. Konica Minolta Gator
Clemson vs. Nebraska in Jacksonville, Fla.
Jacksonville Municipal Stadium Jan. 1, 2009, 1 p.m. CBS

Dabo Swinney takes the Interim tag off his title and faces a resurgent Cornhusker squad.  The Huskers win but don’t take the lead until late.

WINNER: Nebraska by 5.  It took 14 FG or something, but Nebraska’s defense gives the Huskers a win.  It was almost like 1983 again.  Almost.

13. Rose Bowl Game Presented by Citi
Penn State vs. USC in Pasadena, Calif.
Rose Bowl Jan. 1, 2009, 4:30 p.m. ABC

I wanted to put this game higher, I really did.  However, I just don’t see this one being competitive.  Yes, Penn State is a good team, but USC is just loaded.  This one will be a laugher by the end of the 3rd Quarter.   It is only ranked this high because it is the Rose Bowl.

WINNER: USC by14.  The score was the closest thing about this game.

14. Insight
Kansas vs. Minnesota in Tempe, Ariz.
Sun Devil Stadium Dec. 31, 5:30 p.m. NFL Network

Any game with Mangino on the side line has a chance to be interesting.   I hope he picks his nose.

WINNER: Kansas by 21.  No nose was picked on camera.

15.  Champs Sports
Wisconsin vs. Florida State in Orlando, Fla.
Florida Citrus Bowl Dec. 27, 4:30 p.m. ESPN

The Badgers are excited to be back in the Capitol One Bow-Wait, this isn’t the Capitol One?  Crap.  Take the Seminoles.

WINNER: FSU by 29.  The Badgers are still trying to figure out how to drive from Orlando to Madison without going through Georgia.

16. Emerald
Miami (Fla.) vs. California in San Francisco
AT&T Park Dec. 27, 8 p.m. ESPN

Miami has been cold and hot.  Look for Cal to win, but it’ll be entertaining due to the lack of D on both sides of the ball.

WINNER: Cal by 7.  Who knew a lack of D could be mitigated by a lack of O?

17. Gaylord Hotels Music City
Boston College vs. Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
LP Field Dec. 31, 3:30 p.m. ESPN

Yay!  Vandy in a bowl game.  Not a terrible matchup and a surprise ending (yeah, I think Vandy wins).

WINNER: Vandy by 2.  Go Dores!  I am most proud of this pick, for some reason.

18. Papajohns.com
NC State vs. Rutgers in Birmingham, Ala.
Legion Field Dec. 29, 3 p.m. ESPN

The Wolfpack needed to win the last four games just to get bowl eligible.  Rutgers won their last six.  Look for Rutgers to provide a little bright spot for the Big East.

WINNER: Rutgers by 6.  Late rally helps the Big East pretend they are relevant.

19. Pioneer Las Vegas
BYU vs. Arizona in Las Vegas
Sam Boyd Stadium Dec. 20, 8 p.m. ESPN

Anyone else think it is interesting that the two largest non-party schools are going to New Orleans and Las Vegas? BYU piles up the points.

WINNER: Arizona by 10.  I never in a million years thought Arizona could hold BYU to 21 points.  Oh yeah, three turnovers will do that for you.

20. Tostitos Fiesta
Ohio State vs. Texas in Glendale, Ariz.
University of Phoenix Stadium Jan. 5, 2009, 8 p.m. FOX

Buckeye fans will finally redeem the Sweater Vest’s big bowl reputation, right up until kickoff.

WINNER: Texas by 3.  Even though I called the winner, I have to admit Ohio State came to play and actually make a good showing for the Big 10 here.  This was as close to a moral victory as you can get for the Buckeyes.

21. R+L Carriers New Orleans
Southern Miss vs. Troy in New Orleans
Superdome Dec. 21, 8:15 p.m. ESPN

An otherwise compelling matchup is ruined by Southern Miss’ bad football team.

WINNER: Southern Miss by 3.  I guess Troy was worse.

22. Valero Alamo
Missouri vs. Northwestern in San Antonio
Alamodome Dec. 29, 8 p.m. ESPN

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.  Missouri will absolutely pound Northwestern.

WINNER: Mizzu by 7.  This game and the Fiesta Bowl are part of the “The Big 12 was WAY over rated” evidence.  Yeah, the Tigers won, but had to go to overtime to do it.  On paper, this looked like a blowout waiting for a kickoff.  After watching the game, I will say that Northwestern didn’t do anything special but play football.  Luckily for Mizzu, that was not enough…barely.

23. Roady’s Humanitarian
Maryland vs. Nevada in Boise, Idaho
Bronco Stadium Dec. 30, 4:30 p.m. ESPN

Maryland loses the game because they cannot find Boise.

WINNER: Maryland by 7.  I guess they did find Boise.

24. Sheraton Hawaii
Hawaii vs. Notre Dame in Honolulu
Aloha Stadium Dec. 24, 8 p.m. ESPN

Who is this Notre Dame I keep hearing about?

WINNER: Norte Dame by 28.  Yeah, I missed this one big time.

25. FedEx Orange
Cincinnati vs. Virginia Tech in Miami
Dolphin Stadium Jan. 1, 2009, 8:30 p.m. FOX

What is this Big East I keep hearing about?  Oh, wait the conference that has the Orange Bowl championship after the 1st.

WINNER: Virginia Tech by 13.  I missed this one, too.  Tech manhandled the Bearcats in the second half to avenge last year’s debacle in the Orange Bowl.

26. Chick-fil-A
LSU vs. Georgia Tech in Atlanta
Georgia Dome Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m. ESPN

Tech runs for over a million yards.  Pundits say the ACC is all the way back.  See number 26.

WINNER: LSU by a brazillion.  Another whiff.  Not that I am disappointed at all.  LSU, bucking convention, waited until the end of the season to get rings made.

27. Bell Helicopter Armed Forces
Houston vs. Air Force in Fort Worth, Texas
Amon G. Carter Stadium Dec. 31, Noon ESPN

Houston is in a bowl game?

WINNER: Houston by 6.

28. Outback
South Carolina vs. Iowa in Tampa, Fla.
Raymond James Stadium Jan. 1, 2009, 11 a.m. ESPN

Blech.  Iowa dominates with its running game.  Ugly. Early.

WINNER: Iowa by 21.  Ugly. Early.

29. AutoZone Liberty
Kentucky vs. East Carolina in Memphis, Tenn.
Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium Jan. 2, 2009, 5 p.m. ESPN

East Carolina wins big by sacking Mike Hartline eight times, scoring two defensive TDs.

Winner: UK by 6.  Nice win for the ‘Cats.  Kentucky scores the defensive TDs for the difference.

30. Independence
Northern Illinois vs. Louisiana Tech in Shreveport, La.
Independence Stadium Dec. 28, 8:15 p.m. ESPN

Louisiana Tech gets the first Independence bowl win for a Dooley in 16 years.  Go look it up.

WINNER:  La Tech by 7.  Dereck becomes the second Dooley to win in Shreveport.

31. International
Buffalo vs. Connecticut in Toronto
Rogers Centre Jan. 3, 2009, Noon ESPN2

The CFL has bowl games?

WINNER: UConn by 18.

32. New Mexico
Colorado State vs. Fresno State in Albuquerque
University Stadium Dec. 20, 2:30 p.m. ESPN

The Bulldogs win big in a snowstorm.  Or the Rams win big in a rain storm. Either way, it is just a bad game to watch.

WINNER: Colorado State by 5.  I missed this one badly.  It was entertaining and close.

33. St. Petersburg
Memphis vs. South Florida in St. Petersburg. Fla.
Tropicana Field Dec. 20, 4:30 p.m. ESPN2

The only compelling reason to watch this is to see if the officials have to make any rulings because the ball hits the catwalk at Tropicana Field.

WINNER: South Florida by 27.  I was right.

34. Motor City
Florida Atlantic vs. Central Michigan in Detroit
Ford Field Dec. 26, 8 p.m. ESPN

There is no reason to watch this unless you are being forced to.  I think the Geneva Convention applies if you are forced to, so you have that going for you.

WINNER:  We are still waiting to find out.

A Georgia Dawg in the Mid-West alone with his thoughts.

BBQ, Ball and Bets

There's nothing like a sunny fall afternoon, pork BBQ (with mustard sauce, of course!), a pregame tailgate, and...betting online. You heard me right. With a laptop and an internet connection you can check the odds of any game from the 50 yard line. Now that's convenience and will make your tailgate all the more interesting when some dude mentions just how much of a good bet a certain game is.
