From the Cornfield

  • Georgia baseball starts the season out ranked 5th in the baseball writer’s poll.  Top five: UNC, LSU, Rice, Texas A&M, UGA.  Georgia Tech checks in at number 13.  Three other SEC teams are ranked (Ole Miss, 14; Kentucky, 23; Florida, 24).
  • Coach Landers looks for his 800th career win against Savannah State this week.  The Lady Dawgs beat South Carolina to notch 799 last weekend.
  • Sam Bradford decides to stick around and play football another year.  No word on if Matt Stafford has already bought a block of houses in Detroit.
  • Derrick Favors has decided to move from South Atlanta and play for Middle Atlanta next year.   Is this a nail in Felton’s UGA coaching career’s coffin?
  • I nearly cried when I saw John Smoltz put on a Boston cap.  Then I remembered I was a guy.
  • Hey, Mark Sanchez is leaving USC for the draft.  Maybe Matt can sell those houses in Detroit to him.
  • So, having the pro equivalent of Texas Tech and Cincinnati playing in the NFC championship game doesn’t make the pro-playoff people just a bit queasy?
  • Jodie Meeks did something no other Kentucky Wildcat has ever done.  It doesn’t involve academics.  Hint: he was the only player in double figures for the ‘Cats in their 18 point drubbing of Tennessee on Tuesday.  To quote a guy who was watching the game with me: “Yeah, he is feelin’ it.”

Yea, I hated to see Smoltz go also. Stafford should be so lucky to have Sanchez drafted before him. But that’s no worry for me at this point because I’m concentrating 100% on one Mr. Joe Cox!

Stevie: Smoltz to Boston? FABULOUS! Joe Cox? FABULOUS!!

Derrick Favors just announced he will play for the Southeast Atlanta Rajun Atlantans

Quick, what do Jodie Meeks and Joe Namath have in common?

I once saw Andy Landers standing next to Lute Olsen. That was six years ago and it was a pile of wins then.

Joe Namath and Jodie Meeks never went to class at Auburn.

Jodie Meeks, one more Georgia HS product to leave and star beyond state lines, somewhere other than Athens.

Yeah, in my mind that is exhibit one in the case of Felton’s career making a turn after this season. It is ok to whiff sometimes, but too much talent (I’m not talking Meeks, he was going to UK from seventh grade) has gone out of state and to schools in state whilst Felton is making scholly offers to guys out of state that no one else is after. Anyway, here’s hoping Meeks doesn’t outscore Georgia tomorrow.

A Georgia Dawg in the Mid-West alone with his thoughts.

BBQ, Ball and Bets

There's nothing like a sunny fall afternoon, pork BBQ (with mustard sauce, of course!), a pregame tailgate, and...betting online. You heard me right. With a laptop and an internet connection you can check the odds of any game from the 50 yard line. Now that's convenience and will make your tailgate all the more interesting when some dude mentions just how much of a good bet a certain game is.
